The History of Shiroishi Castle

Shiroishi Castle, located in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, is a historic castle originally built from the Sengoku period through the early Edo period. It was first governed by Katakura Kojūrō Kagekatsu, a senior retainer of the Date clan, and later by Katakura Kojūrō Shigenaga as the second lord, with the Katakura family continuing to serve as castle lords for generations. Shiroishi Castle transformed from a fortified mountain castle of the Sengoku era into a hilltop castle of the Edo period. While it entered a period of peace, it also played an important role as a cultural center beyond its military function.

The current Shiroishi Castle features a three-story turret reconstructed in wood in 1995, reflecting the early Edo period design, and now showcases its magnificent appearance to visitors. The restoration was carried out using construction techniques as close as possible to the original, earning high praise from history enthusiasts and tourists alike. From the castle keep, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Shiroishi City and the Zao mountain range, making it a place where both historical charm and natural beauty can be fully appreciated.
